Monochrome Neutral Gender

Monochrome Neutral Gender. View of the exhibition at MUSAC, the Castilla y León Museum of Contemporary Art.

The exhibition brings together works by 40 Spanish and international women artists to offer a reflection on the relationship between abstraction, artistic creation and gender.

The Feminist movement had a great impact on Western art in the mid-1970’s; however, female artists whose work did not respond to the creative paradigm based on the human body, or the construction of gender or sexual identity, were largely ignored. The idea behind “Monochrome Neutral Gender” is to highlight the work of these artists, who from a gender perspective, displayed a lack of feminine expressive traits, or in other words, were “monochrome” and “neuter”.

Annie Albers, Elena Asins, Lygia Clark, Sonia Delaunay, Esther Ferrer, Trisha Brown and Soledad Sevilla are just some of the artists whose work can be seen in the exhibition. With over a hundred works on display, including paintings, photographs, collages, textiles, videos and industrial designs, the exhibition seeks to recognise the plurality of feminism in art and the contradictions that come with every theoretical, social and artistic movement.
