The artist’s studio. A view from the photographic archives of the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute

“Maruja Mallo in her studio, surrounded by her work”. Photo: Vicente Moreno, 1936. Moreno Archive No. 28687_B ? Fototeca del Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de Espa?a, Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte

The exhibition looks at the intimate places where painters and sculptors created their works, from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century, in a selection of 90 images from the photographic archives of the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute (IPCE).

These are images that bring together documentary value and aesthetics. Taken by outstanding professionals like Mariano y Vicente Moreno, Juan Cabré, Otto Wunderlich and Juan Miguel Pando, they reflect not only the mastery of the photographers over light and composition, but also their sensitivity in capturing the personality of the painter or sculptor in symbiosis with his or her studio, workshop or workplace.

Snapshots featuring artists like Mariano Benlliure, Querol, Maruja Mallo, Jorge Oteiza and Victorio Macho, among others, that let us guess at the different artistic trends and realities that coexisted in Spanish art during those decades.
