This route can be done in a single day or extended over a weekend and is recommended for private vehicles. It starts in Ordizia, a famous town thanks to its mediaeval farmers’ and livestock market (11th-12th century) held in the Plaza Mayor every Wednesday throughout the year. Highlights of its artistic heritage include the church of Santa María de la Asunción (16th century) and large noble houses such as Abaria, Zabala, Gazteluzar and Barrena in the old town.

Next we visit Beasain, which is almost part of the urban centre of Ordizia. On arrival, it is surprising to see the mediaeval site of Igartza, a space where the focus is the palace of the Igartza family (16th century). Alongside this is a well-preserved set of buildings that served the palace: a shrine, the houses of the miller and the blacksmith, stables, a wine press, an hydraulic mill, a foundry, a wooden weir and a stone bridge over the Orio River.

Beasain also offers visitors the chance to visit buildings such as the church of Santa María de la Asunción (15th-18th centuries) or the Yarza manor house. Just a short distance away in the Loinatz area is the basilica of San Martín (19th century) and the shrine to Our Lady (16th century).

This route takes the main road leading to the port of Etxegarate. Nine kilometres away is the town of Idiazabal, a traditional sheep’s cheese-making centre with its famous Designation of Origin. A visit to the Visitor and Tasting Centre is a must!
From here we take the turn-off towards the mediaeval town of Segura, just a few kilometres down. Founded in 1256, the old town is home to jewels such as the palaces or towers of Lardizabal (the present town hall), Ardixarra, now the Mediaeval Visitor Centre, Guevara, Júaregui, Arrue and Balenzegi, or La Asunción church (16th century).

Another detour takes us to the nearby town of Zerain, just 3 kilometres away, a famous rural spot for its mining and wood trade tradition, as set out in the Cultural Park. This comprises an Ethnographic Museum, the hydraulic Larraondo forge, an 18th-century prison and the remains of the Aizpea mining complex dating to the 16th century. The old town offers tours around buildings such as the Jáuregui palace (Gothic origin) and La Asunción church (18th century).

The route comes to an end in Ormaiztegi, where we get to from Zerain, after just a six kilometre journey north. Its most standout moment welcome visitors – the old Madrid-Paris railway viaduct. Built in 1864 and in use until 1995, it is an important example of industrial architecture. The town centre is worth a visit with the home where legendary 19th-century general Tomás de Zumalacárregui, now converted into a museum.
